Marine layer

The Los Angeles Marine Layer.

When a fly ball in Dodger stadium narrowly misses going over the wall, the Marine Layer is often blamed or thanked, depending on which team hit the ball.

The term originated when Albert Pujols began his contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in a miserable slump. Pujols' teammate at the time, Torii Hunter, attempted to console Pujols by blaming the thick marine layer, known for cutting down flyballs hit at night in Angels Stadium of Anaheim. The joke serves as both a reminder of how horrible Pujols' contract is and to mock the decision to name a team after a city in which they do not play.
